Cannabis and Mirtazapine

Mirtazapine is a medication used to help with depression. It’s an atypical antidepressant that’s prescribed when the normal SSRIs don’t tend to work. It can make you very tired, and it might impact cannabis as well.

What Mirtazapine is

This is usually under the brand name Remeron, and it’s an antidepressant that treats depression when people don’t respond normally to SSRIs. This is usually taken with a normal 15 mg dosage during bedtime, increasing this to 45 mg as needed by the doctor itself.

Right now, we don't really know how this works with depression, but it can help with increasing the serotonin along with the norepinephrine within the brain. Those are the chemicals that boost the mood, and in turn, help to relieve depression.

The Risks

The risks that come with this do impact the way a person feels.

This is mostly because mirtazapine does have some side effects such as making you very tired, and cannabis can exacerbate this.

Not to mention, cannabis does have some other side effects which might be adverse, including dry mouth, fatigue, not eating enough or too much, memory loss, and paranoia.  Cannabis can stop the metabolism of this too.

The thing with mirtazapine as well, is that it’s also very addictive, and it can sometimes result in more problems when it’s mixed with cannabis.

A big problem with both of these, is that it can dramatically increase your serotonin. This drug does too, so it causes serotonin syndrome, and this can cause both mild, and severe problems as well.

Some of the symptoms include:

  • Confusion

  • Shivering diarrhea

  • Restlessness

  • Rapid heartbeat

  • Headaches

  • Insomnia

Some of the severe symptoms might include:

  • The muscles going rigid

  • Seizures

  • Fever

  • Death

  • Problem with heartbeat

  • Unconsciousness

This can also be a big problem if you’re someone who is sensitive to serotonin. The FDA also has a boxed warning that comes with this.

What that means, is that the boxed warning says that there is a chance that the side effects could be severe.

One thing that mirtazapine does, is that it can sometimes make you feel more suicidal, and it increases the behavior and risk not just in young kids, but adults as well.

This is best not mixed, as this does carry the boxed warning, and it’s best to use this based on what the doctor is able to recommend for you.

What to Do If you need Both

The big thing to remember here, is that with any drug, you should always talk to your doctor about this.

Always be aware of any symptoms that serotonin syndrome comes with, and if you do have symptoms, always get medical care for this.

Both of these do increase the overall risk of many of the symptoms that are here. If you notice that you’re dealing with these symptoms, seek out proper medical care.

Both of these things can cause major problems when mixed together. Cannabis is bet used without taking mirtazapine, and if you absolutely need to take the drug, talk to your doctor, as it can be a potentially severe SSRI.  The best thing to do is to always ask your doctor for any help, and you should avoid mixing all of the different kinds of medications that are out there with cannabis.

Cannabis can help with a lot of things, but with this particular drug, it can cause more problems than it’s worth, and a lot of times, it creates a lot of issues for people at hand. In any case, speak to your doctor, and ask them for the correct prescription.
