Cannabis and Sleep

Cannabis is really important for different things, but one thing that’s started to become more popular is sleep. You naturally need to sleep, in order to function. Without it, we do die. We go between rapid eye movement or REM sleep, and non-REM sleep. This is characterized by being a bit unconscious, reducing the activity of the muscles, and also inhibiting the sensors, and reduced types of interactions.

In a recent study, about 1% of people that were surveyed mentioned that they had a sleep disorder, and that was the main condition that they used to get cannabis for.  Most people mentioned too that they got better after 6 weeks of using this as well. Sleep is a very restorative part of our lives, and it even plays a part in our immunity and memory. The disturbances of sleep, or impairing this is actually responsible for diabetes, pain, cardiovascular issues and even mood disorders too.

THC or CBD?

This is one that can be a challenge for some people, because they may not be sure of which one to use. THC of course is something that a lot of people do use for sleeping. It was found that this was the most common one among patients that were surveyed. But there are people who use CBD to help with this one.  Some people have even endorsed that it helps with sleeping issues, including insomnia, and also works to help with falling asleep much bigger.

New, emerging research has found that CBN may also be a big part of helping you sleep. It can help, along with THC working together, to improve your sleep. Some of the aspects include:

  • Being able to fall asleep faster

  • Staying asleep for far longer

  • Improving the sleep quality so you’re more refreshed

But there still needs to be more research on CBN, and how it may help with sleep.

Timing does matter

For those looking to use cannabis for sleep, it’s important to understand the product you take, and when you decide to take it. For example, if you’re going to choose between indica and sativa, go for an indica product, since it can help with mellowing out, and it does create the couch lock. However, some have also found some rare sativa strains which might help with sleep.

As for when to take them, it does depend. If you’re choosing to inhale something, you’ll just have to take it a few minutes before sleeping, because the effects kick in with about 30 minutes passing after you consume it, and they can last for up to 6 hours.

But, if you decide to use gummies or capsule products, you’ll want to make sure that you allot for more time, up to 2 hours in some cases. It can take up to 4 or more hours though to hit the peak effects from this as well.

Tinctures are a little bit faster if you use them sublingually, but if you decide to take them like an edible, treat it like an edible.

When you use oral products to help with sleep, there is a bit of trial and error to this, since it can be something that you might not feel the effects of right away. If you’re taking a lot though, the effects can start to last a lot longer, and if you’re someone who is trying not to wake up high, be mindful of the concentrations, as that can play a role in it.

Cannabis can help with sleep, and it can be great for getting a good night’s rest.
